Political Leaders Respond After ICU Nurse Alex Pretti Dies in Federal Enforcement in Minneapolis

Political leaders across the country responded with shock and condemnation after Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, was fatally shot by a U.S. Border Patrol agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Jan. 24, 2026.

Pretti, who worked at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System and had no serious criminal record, was killed as federal agents carried out enforcement actions in the city. Multiple news outlets have noted that video footage and witness accounts have raised serious questions about the official account of the shooting, with some footage showing Pretti holding a cellphone rather than a weapon at the time he was shot.

Local Officials Demand Accountability

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the incident “sickening” and directly urged the federal government to end the current enforcement operation in Minneapolis, saying the state has “had it” with the confrontations and was documenting evidence to pursue legal action against federal agents.
