Tsavo, Kenya — In the heart of one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife regions, where acacia trees dot the horizon and the roar of lions echoes across the savannah, one man is quietly transforming the fight against drought. Known locally as “The Water Man of Tsavo,” he has dedicated his life to ensuring that wildlife has access to one of the most basic yet critical resources: water.
A Lifelong Calling
For decades, seasonal droughts have plagued Tsavo, threatening the survival of elephants, giraffes, zebras, and countless other species. Streams dry up, watering holes vanish, and animals are forced into perilous migrations. Observing this, the Water Man—whose real name is Daniel Mwangi—made it his mission to intervene.
“I couldn’t stand by and watch these magnificent creatures suffer,” Mwangi says. “Water is life, for them as much as for us.”
Innovative Solutions in Action
Mwangi and his small team of volunteers have devised ingenious methods to transport and store water across vast stretches of Tsavo. From digging artificial watering holes to installing solar-powered pumps in remote areas, their work is a blend of science, ingenuity, and sheer determination.
“During the driest months, I sometimes carry water for miles to ensure that a thirsty elephant or rhino can survive another day,” Mwangi explains.
The results are astonishing. Water points established by Mwangi have saved countless animals from dehydration, and they have also reduced dangerous encounters between wildlife and humans searching for water near villages.
A Community Effort
Mwangi emphasizes that his work is not just about wildlife—it’s about community. Local villagers have joined the effort, helping maintain water points and monitoring animal health. In return, they witness firsthand the importance of coexistence with the natural world.
“When the elephants drink safely without entering our farms, everyone wins,” says Mary Kamau, a local resident.
